Michael Asks:
I Am A 17 Year Old Student With Good Typing Skills Looking For A Typing Job I Can Do In The Holidays?
Thanks for your question Michael, I understand you are in the lower 6th at college and were looking for typing work that you could do during the long holidays. You were also concerned that you would not be able to get work if you were competing against people who were older and more experienced.
It's ironic that in the UK before the industrial revolution most people worked from home. Before the big textile mills families used to work from home producing yarn and weaving. Someone would come along with a horse and cart to pick up what you had produces and you would get paid for the work. Everyone used to pitch in even the young children. This meant that even the youngest learned a valuable skill that would be useful to them in later life.
Unfortunately these days we are pretty much left on our own and most of the work available in this country is centralised. I don't know about you but I preferred the old fashioned way of working.
As a younger person with less life experience you may find it more difficult if you applied for a position that required specific skills that you may not have. The great thing about doing typing work from home is that you can afford the time to learn new skills. In a work environment you would have a boss or supervisor looking over your shoulder so you would pretty much have to hit the ground running.
Firstly I'd suggest you get your feet wet with some survey work, take a look at our page on the best free paid survey sites. They will allow you to start earning straight away. The upside is that you do not need to pass an interview as such as you are only offering your opinion for cash. These survey companies like to have a wide age group in their survey panels so you will fit in great.
I have talked a lot about making money with survey sites before so I won't go into too much detail here. The trick to doing well with surveys is to join lots of sites so you get a steady stream of work. If you just join one you may only get one or two surveys a day. Join a dozen and you will have a stream of work.
So surveys should get you started and you will pick up a few new skills and some experience along the way. The next step is to start applying for home based typing jobs which is covered in our getting started guide. This covers exactly where you can find these types of job and how you can be proactive by approaching people looking for workers like yourself. They call this freelancing.
The biggest set back for most people not getting typing work is not having the right mindset. It's not actually about your age, your race or your social status as online this means nothing. Get out there and take action because as sure as eggs is eggs if you do nothing then nothing will happen. Take the first step and things will start to happen. I know it probably sound a bit like new age hippy talk but it works. How do you think most of the famous UK entrepreneurs got where they are today?
