If you have previously worked in a secretarial environment and have done any sort of transcription work you may have considered doing audio typing jobs from home. Audio typing can be done online and the work can be very varied, much more varied than the type of audio typing that you are probably used to.
The range and variation of audio typing work available online means that you have to be able to handle many different types of subject and many different types of accent. Depending on the type of person or company you are working for you may find yourself having to transcribe audio on many different types of subject. This means that it helps greatly if you have not only a good command of the English language but an understanding of context and good grammar.
The difficultly can come when you do not fully understand the subject, for example people who are experienced in medical transcription are going to be used to a lot of the medical terminology. It would be quite easy to misunderstand and misinterpret a lot of what you are hearing if you do not understand the context.
Accents can also be a problem. If you are from the UK and are doing audio typing jobs for an American you may have trouble understanding some of the broader accents. As the internet is worldwide you could be dealing with less than perfect English from people in countries all over the world. Having a good ear and being able to pick up an understanding of the accent you are transcribing is a great help.
As I mentioned before there are quite a few different types of typing from home work including audio typing jobs you can do from home. This will not be like an audio typing position you may have had in an office. If you get a job working through a company or agency that act as middlemen between the people looking for audio typist and the audio typists themselves then no two jobs you get may be the same.
You may apply and get a job working for a single company online for which you are more likely to be doing much of the same type of work. You may get a position in the semiconductor industry or for a lawyer. The advantage of applying for positions directly is that you will have a much better idea of the type of work you will be doing.
The internet is big and there are many small businesses and individuals that cannot afford a full time audio typist and therefore may employ you as a freelance. This means that you may work for a number of different people but only periodically. This is much like being self employed. The advantage of this type of work is that it is generally much more flexible so you can pick and choose what work you do and when you do it.
Working as a self employed audio typist also tends to pay more as there is less competition for this type of work and you are not losing a cut of your earnings to the middlemen. There also tend to be less people willing to do this type of work as most people looking for work from home positions just want to work for a single company and get paid by a single entity. Of course the downside to a self employed work from home job is that you have to take care of your own taxes and manage your clients yourself.
