Stay At Home Jobs

Most everyone seriously underestimates the amount of people who are working from home. In the United States some studies claim that as many as half of all jobs are made up of home based businesses.

In the UK the office for national statistics has published a study on home based working. They show that in 2005 homeworkers make up 11 percent of the workforce and this is a figure that has been constantly growing since 1997. This equates to over 3 million people. The role of the internet has played a big part in this allowing anyone with an internet connection to be able to work from home.

This figure is certainly much higher today but not all of this type of home work is made up of people doing typing jobs from home. A large proportion is made up of the self employed whether that is a person running their own business or working as a freelancer. Only a small percentage of the total number of people working from home are telecommuting. That is they work for an employer who allows them to do their job at home.

It is interesting to note that there are twice as many men working from home as there are women. This could be due to the fact that most businesses in the UK are owned and run by men. This typically reflects the current state of general employment in the UK where most full time positions are currently filled by men as well.

The internet has provided a great opportunity for stay at home jobs because of the lower start up cost for anyone wishing to start their own business, freelance typing or find work with an employer. It has also created many more jobs that did not exist in the UK economy before. Over recent years the demand for writers and editors has been consistent providing anyone with the experience and willing to start working at home.

The trend for home typing jobs has increased year on year and it is set to increase. Although over recent years there has been an increase in unemployment the trend seems to have been bucked for home based workers.
